Why stay in Mellieha?

The village of Mellieha is one of Malta's most pristine regions, known for its wonderful sandy beaches and world-class hotels and restaurants. It has become one of the country's most important historical areas and in 2009, Mellieha was officially recognized as one of Europe's top off-the-beaten-track destinations and awarded the European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) award.

Situated at the Northest point on the island, Mellieha exhibits breathtaking views of Gozo and Comino whilst picturesque sunsets can be enjoyed every summer evening from several hilltops and cliffs surrounding the village. Mellieha is also home to Malta's largest beach - Mellieha Bay.

The village festa is celebrated on the 8th of September, and this involves a whole week of celebrations including band marches and a series of ground and aerial firework displays.

Places of interest and things to do around Mellieha

Whilst in Mellieha you have a variety of places of interest that you can visit. Highlights include bays, beaches, churches, archaeological temples and sites, coastal towers, fortifications, World War 2 shelters and more.

If you're the adventurous type you can take part in several outdoor and water sport activities or visit one of the local diving centres. Malta has become a popular spot for scuba diving due to the warm clear water hosting a number of wrecks dating back to WW2.

Anyone visiting the Maltese islands will find a treasure trove of history. Over the centuries, being located at the crossroads of the Mediterranean meant that Malta attracted many foreigners - mostly unwelcome. In World War 2, Malta's strategic importance made it impossible for the British to give it up and for the Nazis to let it be. The Maltese people were merely caught in the middle and had to fight a war that was not theirs.
